Hey, I'm Lydia!

I like playing in the sun and dirt, growing things and taking care of plant babies. When I’m not doing that, I’m watching E! or the  RHWOanywhere and thinking about how to make french fries burn fat (I've never met a french fry I didn’t love). I earned my level 1 crunchy hippie mom badge birthing my little man Mitt unmedicated (ya know, how everyone around the world does...) But I guess the internet liked it cuz our little birth story went viral- go figure.  I'm on a mission to keep myself and my family well, naturally and love and honor our Earth. I'm married to Ben and we are a blending family in progress. I'm loving on my growing tribe of sisterhood from all around the world, join us and stay connected.

Benefits of Pets at Home

Benefits of Pets at Home

Like a true crazy person, I got my dog Duke while I was in my second trimester with baby Mitt. Because I was able to take some time off of real estate, I was at home alot, and Duke and I bonded easily during this time. Its almost like he knew I was going through something and he was super sweet.

There is no denying that pets are the best companions for human beings from every age group. Apart from being merely companions, it has been scientifically proven that pets are extremely helpful in keeping their owners healthy and fit.

Pets are also believed to be speeding up recovery in patients suffering from major health issues such as depression, anxiety disorders and chronic pains such as sinus or migraine. Even though many people think that having pets at home make kids and adults prone to allergic conditions; studies have proven that kids growing up with pets are at a much-alleviated risk of allergies and asthma.

The Intrinsic Health Benefits of Having Pets

Decreasing stress- Researchers in the State University of New York at Buffalo in the year 2002 had proven in their study that while conducting a stressful task, people have experienced relatively less stress when they were in the company of their pets than with a family member, spouse or close friend. Rehabilitation centers such as Promises Treatment Centers not only recommend their patients to consider getting a pet at home but also allows pets within their rehabilitation facilities.

Lowering blood pressure and easing pain- Some studies have come out with concrete evidence which proves that having one or more pets have the potential of lowering blood pressure especially in hypersensitive or high-risk patients. One of the senior most veterinary doctors, Marty Becker at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has exclaimed as to how having a dog around is capable of lowering one’s blood pressure. Pets can also be the ideal medicine when a person is dealing with chronic pain such as migraine or arthritis. Pets reduce anxiety. Well, lesser the anxiety, easier it is to handle pain. A similar study from Loyola University had proven how patients resorting to pet therapy tend to require far less medication than those who do not.

Improving one’s mood- Most of the health benefits of having pets stem from emotional and mental benefits. People with pets have more laughter in their lives and are usually less harried. One of the primary reasons why they are used in several forms of therapy. Dogs are often used to help soldiers recover from post-traumatic stress disorders. It has also been established that there’s a remarkably decreased suicide rate among individuals with pets since it happens to be one of the most acute anxiety triggers. Teenagers and adults owning pets have someone to be responsible for and someone who genuinely cares about them.

Preventing strokes- Even though dogs are flaunted for their health benefits, the gains can be seen by cat owners as well.
