Hey, I'm Lydia!

I like playing in the sun and dirt, growing things and taking care of plant babies. When I’m not doing that, I’m watching E! or the  RHWOanywhere and thinking about how to make french fries burn fat (I've never met a french fry I didn’t love). I earned my level 1 crunchy hippie mom badge birthing my little man Mitt unmedicated (ya know, how everyone around the world does...) But I guess the internet liked it cuz our little birth story went viral- go figure.  I'm on a mission to keep myself and my family well, naturally and love and honor our Earth. I'm married to Ben and we are a blending family in progress. I'm loving on my growing tribe of sisterhood from all around the world, join us and stay connected.

I am so obsessed with the visual appeal of plants that I didnt even know that air in my home could could be filled with invisible toxins such as formaldehyde and carbon monoxide which can be eliminated by the indoor plants! Bad indoor air quality is capable of causing serious health problems such as lung cancer, asthma and various allergic reactions on the skin. There are many more benefits that I will list below, but here is one more freebie, placing one or more plants in a teenager’s room can help them to concentrate better on their studies or work. Read below to discover and know more about the several advantages of potted plants.

Health Benefits of Indoor Plants

1. They are natural healers- The Aloe Vera plant which is grown in most of our houses is known as the medicinal plant and the ‘plant of immortality’. It comes with innumerable healing benefits, the most significant of them being its potential in purifying the air. The gel present inside the Aloe Vera plant is capable of healing cuts and can also soothe burns, including sunburns. The leaves of this super medicinal plant can also help reduce the symptoms of asthma – this is done by boiling the leaves in water and then breathing in the vapor.

2. Gives out fresh air- Some potted plants have the ability to cleanse the air indoors. A study carried out by NASA, known as the ‘Clean Air Study’ had determined the kind of plants which purify the air we breathe by eradicating harmful toxins. One of them happens to be the spider plant which is extremely convenient to be grown indoors – it cleans the air in your house of benzene, carbon monoxide, and xylene. These are the basic volatile organic compounds emitted in our homes’ air by house appliances, furniture, and carpets. The rubber plant was the second plant that had featured in the study by NASA. They are ornamental plants with oval-shaped leaves and have the potential of eliminating toxins such as formaldehyde from the air in our homes. With time, the effectiveness of the rubber plant enhances. Formaldehyde is generally emitted from air fresheners, nail polish, house flooring, etc.

3. It lowers the background noises- Indoor plants have the potential of alleviating noise pollution. This is because they can absorb, diffract and reflect the background noises, thereby making the environment comfortable for the people indoors. It is known to absorb sound best in acoustically live areas.

4. Less stress and restful sleep- Various studies have shown and proven that plants in your home and workplaces have a very positive effect on the occupants – it reduces stress, fatigue and enhances one’s productivity. Try placing some plants with broad-leafed plants such as bamboo palm on your office or study desk and bedroom and see the wonders for yourself. These plants regulate humidity and diminish the carbon dioxide emissions in your house or office. Studies have also shown how the vapor from certain plants such as lavender and jasmine can lead to a more restful and serene sleep. Try keeping both or one of them under the bed and see how the fragrances from these plants induce a state of tranquility that will help you have a better and sounder sleep.

Concluding Thoughts

Indoor plants have fabulous health benefits and one can see the wonders within a span of two weeks. Colorful flowers and fresh leaves of the potted plants act as fabulous relaxing agents as well.
