Hey, I'm Lydia!

I like playing in the sun and dirt, growing things and taking care of plant babies. When I’m not doing that, I’m watching E! or the  RHWOanywhere and thinking about how to make french fries burn fat (I've never met a french fry I didn’t love). I earned my level 1 crunchy hippie mom badge birthing my little man Mitt unmedicated (ya know, how everyone around the world does...) But I guess the internet liked it cuz our little birth story went viral- go figure.  I'm on a mission to keep myself and my family well, naturally and love and honor our Earth. I'm married to Ben and we are a blending family in progress. I'm loving on my growing tribe of sisterhood from all around the world, join us and stay connected.

How To Sage Your Space

How To Sage Your Space

With everything that has been happening this year, I’m sure many of our homes are feeling pretty stressed and turbulent. Negative energy can build up and contribute to a lack of peace and harmony in any space. This is a great opportunity to get into sage smudging/cleansing!

Sage has been found to have many healing and cleansing properties over the years. Even before modern times, Native Americans used this amazing plant’s smoke to permeate their spaces and get rid of bad energy! So how can you take advantage of this awesome gift of nature? Below is a step-by-step guide on how to sage your space whenever you need to reset and clear out negative energy. Let’s get started!

  1. First, you’ll need a sage bundle! You can purchase them as is or in a kit, just be sure that they are from a reputable source that harvests and grows responsibly! If you don’t want to get one that has already been made, read THIS to learn how to make your own!

  2. Now that you have the sage to burn, you’ll of course need a lighter, and a fireproof dish to catch the ashes as you go. Some people even use large seashells or clay bowls as well.

  3. As you should with any fire-based activity, you need to have a way to put out the fire if needed, and when you’re finished. A bowl of sand (or dirt) works best for putting out burning sage, since water could damage the bundle by making it soggy and fall apart. Simply dab the lit end of the sage gently into the sand a few times until it is no longer burning.

  4. So, with all your supplies in place, it’s time to take some time for mindfulness. Think about what you want to achieve during this cleansing cycle, and focus on it to prepare your mindset. You can do this in a number of ways: journaling what you want out, and what you want to be welcomed in; by reciting a mantra; or simply having a few minutes of peace and quiet before you begin. Some ideas to get you started on a mantra are: “I cleanse this space of all negativity. Let only harmony and peace remain.” and “With this smoke, my space is healed.” Whatever you want/need, make it easy to remember and focus on as you begin your cleansing.

  5. Okay! Now we are ready to begin! Start your cleanse by opening a least one window or door to the outside. You can even open them all if you want, just as long as there is a way for the negative energy to move out and away from your space as you cleanse. Without this step, there is nowhere for it to go, and you are defeating your own purpose. Think of this negativity as an unwanted guest—you have to show it the way out and make it leave that way!

  6. You can now light your sage. Let it burn freely for about 15-20 seconds, and then blow it out like a candle. This should result in a little glowing ember that starts smoking. That’s exactly what you want! Now, place your sage gently on your fireproof dish and begin walking through your space and fanning the smoke into every nook and cranny you can reach. (Some people enjoy using a large feather to fan, but it’s totally fine to use your hand or anything light you can wave into the smoke to guide it. No pressure.)

  7. As you make you make your way around your designated space, continue to keep your focus on the intentions you set in step 4. This will help you stay grounded, and give those negative energies an extra shove on the way out.

  8. Once you have finished, give thanks and snuff out your sage in the sand/dirt. Now you just have to put your cleansing supplies away, close your windows/doors, and enjoy your refreshed and positive atmosphere! Plus, it will smell amazing, too!

Now that you know the basics of how to sage your space, I hope you give it a try and get creative with your own spin on it! It can be as involved or simple as you want, so just go with your flow and have fun! Please let me know below if you have any questions; I’d love to have a chat. :)
