I earned my level 1 crunchy hippie mom badge birthing my little man Mitt unmedicated (ya know, how everyone around the world does...) Tongue scraping is an increasingly popular and important part of oral hygiene. It’s so much better for you to really remove ALL the bacteria in your mouth—not just what’s on your teeth and gums. Letting the ick build up in your mouth can lead to a lot of health problems other than bad breath. You can develop tooth decay, heart disease, digestive problems, and immune system issues. What happens in your mouth impacts the health of your entire body!

So how can you start doing your own tongue scraping?

  • First, get yourself a high quality, stainless steel tongue scraper. These are the safest to use, they last the longest, and they aren’t made with any toxins you get from plastics and parabens. You can easily find one you like on Amazon, so don’t worry about trying to find a specialty store that sells them. 

  • Once you get your shiny new tongue scraper delivered and washed, start adding it into your morning routine. As we sleep, our bodies go through their own cycle of healing and detox. We shed these toxins through dead skin, sweat, and over the surface of our tongues. Scraping your tongue first thing in the morning gets those toxins off, so they don’t get reabsorbed back into your body.

  • When you begin scraping for the first time, be careful not to start too far at the back of your throat. If you go too far, you could trigger your gag reflex, and that’s not the greatest way to start the morning. Try it from the middle of your tongue and scrape downward towards the tip. Use about the same amount of pressure as you would to shave your legs—not too hard, but hard enough to actually work. Wipe off what’s left on the scraper and repeat two to three more times. You can start progressively higher on your tongue until you find the furthest back you comfortably can. 

  • As you become more comfortable with it, you can add this small routine in every time you brush and floss. Tongue scraping reaps the most benefits when you do it consistently… You can reduce bad breath, improve your sense of taste, boost your immunity, and prevent cavities! Tongue scraping is a super easy and totally natural way you can help your overall health stay on the up and up.
