Hey, I'm Lydia!

I like playing in the sun and dirt, growing things and taking care of plant babies. When I’m not doing that, I’m watching E! or the  RHWOanywhere and thinking about how to make french fries burn fat (I've never met a french fry I didn’t love). I earned my level 1 crunchy hippie mom badge birthing my little man Mitt unmedicated (ya know, how everyone around the world does...) But I guess the internet liked it cuz our little birth story went viral- go figure.  I'm on a mission to keep myself and my family well, naturally and love and honor our Earth. I'm married to Ben and we are a blending family in progress. I'm loving on my growing tribe of sisterhood from all around the world, join us and stay connected.

Purify the Air in Your Home

Purify the Air in Your Home

Keeping the air in your home clean is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your family. The air in your home can actually be five to ten times more polluted than the air outside. You might think that sounds like a crazy fact, but what makes it true is actually the contained atmosphere a home provides. Anything and everything that hurts your air quality is going to be much more concentrated in that enclosed space than it would be outside. Things like cigarette smoke, outside air, chemical emissions from furniture, mold spores, and even cleaning products can heavily impact the air quality in your home. You need the air you breathe at home to be as clean as possible, because more than half the air you and your family breathe in your lifetimes will be from home. However, fancy air purifying machines can be very expensive, noisy, or even made from toxic materials themselves. So what are some of the best ways you can clear the air in your home, naturally?

Below, I’m going to tell you about five of the best 100% natural options for purifying the air you and your family breathe at home.

  1. Activated Charcoal. This substance is great as an air filter, or even added to homemade potpourri bowls around the house. The tiny holes in charcoal easily trap all kinds of toxins and particles in the air that touches it. Activated charcoal also works very well to prevent moisture buildup, mold, and mildew. One of the best features is that you don’t have to worry about any kind of bad smell coming from it; activated charcoal is odorless!

  2. Beeswax Candles. Unlike mass-produced candles, beeswax candles have no chemicals or paraffins in them. When you burn a beeswax candle, it’s a clean burn that doesn’t release any toxins or smoke into your air. They also ionize the air around them so that toxins get attracted to, weighed down, and then neutralized as they pass by the candle. Beeswax is also a renewable resource, so that means not only are you helping your home, you’re helping our beautiful earth!

  3. Essential Oil Diffusers. Of course, we all know that essential oils smell great, and can do wonders for your skin and mood… What I bet you might not have known, is that they can actually work to detox the air in your home as well! Mixing certain essential oils together have been proven to have antibacterial benefits to the air, and even reduce dust mite numbers! For antibacterial benefits, try a tea tree oil diffuser. If you want something a little more comprehensive, make or find a mixture of lemon, cinnamon, pine needle, thyme grapefruit, eucalyptus, and oregano oils for a fantastic bacteria-fighting diffuser. To cut down on those nasty dust mites, you can use clove, eucalyptus, and rosemary oils individually, or mixed if you like the scents together!

  4. Himalayan Pink Salt Lamps. Similarly to beeswax candles, Himalayan pink salt lamps are ionized, so they attract and get rid of toxins in the air. However, they work differently by absorbing the water vapor in the air, pulling the particles and toxins out of it, then releasing pure water vapor back into the air with the heat of the bulb. These lamps are also very beautiful, and are great conversation pieces for your home as well!

  5. Houseplants. Raising certain plants in your home can do amazing wonders for your air quality. Mother nature has some heavy hitting toxin removers in her arsenal that you should definitely take advantage of.

Here are three that are super easy to take care of, and that get rid of the nastiest chemicals in your air:

  • Bamboo Palm pulls benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from the air.

  • Garden Mums pull ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and xylene from the air.

  • Spider Plants pull formaldehyde and xylene from the air.

Air purification can sound like a lot to think about, but I promise it’s so easy to get into! Just look at these five examples, and you can see that all but the plants and candles take care of things on their own! Plus, candles and plants are not so high maintenance at the end of the day. I hope you are inspired to use these natural items to clear the air in your home.
