Hey, I'm Lydia!

I like playing in the sun and dirt, growing things and taking care of plant babies. When I’m not doing that, I’m watching E! or the  RHWOanywhere and thinking about how to make french fries burn fat (I've never met a french fry I didn’t love). I earned my level 1 crunchy hippie mom badge birthing my little man Mitt unmedicated (ya know, how everyone around the world does...) But I guess the internet liked it cuz our little birth story went viral- go figure.  I'm on a mission to keep myself and my family well, naturally and love and honor our Earth. I'm married to Ben and we are a blending family in progress. I'm loving on my growing tribe of sisterhood from all around the world, join us and stay connected.

The Dirt On The Garden Tower 2™!

The Dirt On The Garden Tower 2™!

In my last post: What Can You Grow In Your Garden Tower 2™, we talked about all the main questions you might have about what you can use a Garden Tower 2™ for. Now, it’s time to get our hands dirty and talk about what kind of soil we need, if we need to change it, and how much to use. Let’s get started and get the dirt on the Garden Tower 2™!

What kind of dirt should be used in the Garden Tower 2™?
Potting soil is the best soil for your Garden Tower 2™. This is important because regular garden soil will compact too densely over time and suffocate your plants! “Professional grower’s mix” at your local plant nursery would be a great fit if you fortify it with good, organic plant food mixed into it.

If you really want to get into it, you can also make your own custom soil for your Garden Tower 2™! There are many great recipes online, but the basics you need are; your preferred organic plant food, loam garden soil, peat moss, and vermiculite. You can find the best ratios with a little research once you know what you want to grow in your Garden Tower 2™.

So, now we know what kind of dirt we want; and it’s time to get into how much we need and where it goes!

How much dirt should go in the Garden Tower 2™?
The Garden Tower 2™ holds about 8 cubic feet of dirt. (This is equal to about 60 gallons if cubic feet doesn’t make sense) This much premade soil will usually run you from about $30 to $60 if you’re curious about the budget. It is usually much cheaper to make your own, so peek around your area to see where you can get the best deal!

When you’re filling your Garden Tower 2™, make sure it goes between the inside edge and compost column. The outside is, of course, for your plants, and the compost column is going to hold all your compost--which we will talk about in the next post!

Alright, now that we know what kind and how much soil we need for our Garden Tower 2™, it’s time to discuss whether we need to change it out periodically.

Do you need to change out your Garden Tower 2™’s dirt?
If you went with potting soil and good nutrition mixed in to start with, you shouldn’t need to change the soil for several years. However, you can add compost to the top of the soil and in the pockets to boost your plants’ nutrients. Making sure not to let it dry out too much, as well as utilizing worms for vermicomposting, will keep your soil light and airy so it doesn't suffocate all the roots. An important thing to keep in mind if you’re a newer gardener is to avoid perennial plants with very woody roots. They can be hard to know how to care for without experience and need to be dug out in between seasons to keep them from clogging up your soil.

I hope these last two posts have made the idea of getting a Garden Tower 2™ more and more exciting! Read the final post on common Garden Tower 2™ questions here at How To Compost With A Garden Tower 2™ and find out how to use worms and what to compost in your Garden Tower 2™
