Hey, I'm Lydia!

I like playing in the sun and dirt, growing things and taking care of plant babies. When I’m not doing that, I’m watching E! or the  RHWOanywhere and thinking about how to make french fries burn fat (I've never met a french fry I didn’t love). I earned my level 1 crunchy hippie mom badge birthing my little man Mitt unmedicated (ya know, how everyone around the world does...) But I guess the internet liked it cuz our little birth story went viral- go figure.  I'm on a mission to keep myself and my family well, naturally and love and honor our Earth. I'm married to Ben and we are a blending family in progress. I'm loving on my growing tribe of sisterhood from all around the world, join us and stay connected.

How To Compost With A Garden Tower 2™

How To Compost With A Garden Tower 2™

In my last two posts, What Can You Grow In Your Garden Tower 2™ and The Dirt On The Garden Tower 2™, we talked about what you can grow and what kind of soil you need to grow it! In this post, we’re going to talk about how composting works in the Garden Tower 2™.

One of the best features of the Garden Tower 2™ is the handy dandy compost column! When you get yours, the compost column is the hollow part going down the center of the inside of the Garden Tower 2™. A question many new owners have is what they should fill it with! Keep reading to find out the answer and more about how to compost with a Garden Tower 2™.

What goes in the compost column?
You can fill the compost column with the same things you would put in a regular composter. Plain brown shredded paper/cardboard and kitchen scraps. It is important to NEVER put any scraps from meat, dairy, or citrus leftovers. These can stink up your Garden Tower 2™, make your soil too acidic, and the worms will not be able to eat them. For the Garden Tower 2™, it’s recommended to use 3 parts of bedding (which would be your paper shreds or even peat moss or some of your soil) for every 1 part of scraps. This will keep your compost aerated, nourished, and perfect for your worms and plants! You should also make sure that you keep your scraps broken up into smaller pieces. Use a food processor to chop them up and make them easier for your worms to eat.

So, we know what our worms can eat; and now it’s time to see what kind we need and how many!

What kind of worms, and how many go in the Garden Tower 2™?
The best composting worms are red wigglers, and you can get them at Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm! (He also has a great vermicomposting bin that I have and love called the Hot Frog Living Composter! Read about that on my blog here; if you have an outdoor garden, you would like to use worm compost for.) For the Garden Tower 2™, all you need is about a cup or two of worms! Once you have a good layer of bedding and scraps, you can add your worms, and they’ll work their magic! They will eat your compost, travel through the holes in the compost column, and leave their castings in the soil. This is what will help all the plants in your Garden Tower 2™ thrive!

Okay, we’ve got our compost and our worms, but there’s one more thing about composting you might be wondering about.

What’s with the liquid on the bottom of my Garden Tower 2™??
That is totally normal and a good thing (as long as you aren’t over-watering)! This liquid has passed through all the compost, soil, and worm castings, making it a super nutritious “tea” you can then pour back over the top of your soil! The fancy name for this liquid is “worm tea,” and it’s a great way to give the plants in your Garden Tower 2™ a boost of nutrients. This tea will collect in the bottom drawer of your Garden Tower 2™, so you can easily pull it out and use it without any mess or fuss.

I hope these posts about the Garden Tower 2™ have inspired you to try out this amazing indoor gardening and composting system for yourself! Let me know in the comments if you have any other questions, and I’d love to have a chat with you.
