Camping at Redwoods Forest
For over a year, we had Ben's family reunion to camp in the Redwoods on our calendar. I didn't really think much of it, and can I just tell you that I wasn't quite ready for how amazing The Riley Redwood Roundup would be. (Isn't that the cutest name for a family reunion? Ben's mom came up with it and she even created T shirts.)
We stayed at Camp Liahona Redwoods in Annapolis California. It was a little bit of a hike for us Utah dwellers. But I would never say anything because we had family come in from New York.
We flew into San Francisco and drove north for about 2 hours.
Thank goodness for family that were driving and kind enough to lug our bulky sleeping bags to camp for us.
Camp Liahona is a girls camp, the YMCA used to own it, but the LDS church bought it in the 70’s.
They have all these little cabins on the property and then a group area where everyone can gather around the fire and cook in the camp kitchen. The cabins themselves are absolutely bare bones- basically just bunk beds- they do have lights and heaters.
But the facility is somehow imaculate. Even the campy toilets, were clean and the showers were hot.
You really don't have any cell phone service in the area and we had a full agenda of hikes and family activities to keep us busy. On one of the days we drove to the coast and enjoyed an afternoon on the beach. It was so dang beautiful.
I don't know how many people get a chance to camp in the Redwoods. The majestic Redwood trees are just breathtaking. The smell of the forest is absolutely cleansing - in fact I've been obsessed with diffusing my tree oils since we got back. Cedarwood is basically in my diffuser every night to sleep, its the earthiness that cant be duplicated from a tree oil. Just so grounding.
I'm mesmerized by these huge Redwoods. I think we spent a week breathing some of the clearest air thanks to these hard working ancients.. They have been around for thousands of years (one of the oldest trees at the camp was called “captain moroni” and I believe he is 3000 plus years old.
I may sound like a crazy tree hugger but I do wonder what wisdom these trees have to offer us, having been around for so much longer.
