Hey, I'm Lydia!

I like playing in the sun and dirt, growing things and taking care of plant babies. When I’m not doing that, I’m watching E! or the  RHWOanywhere and thinking about how to make french fries burn fat (I've never met a french fry I didn’t love). I earned my level 1 crunchy hippie mom badge birthing my little man Mitt unmedicated (ya know, how everyone around the world does...) But I guess the internet liked it cuz our little birth story went viral- go figure.  I'm on a mission to keep myself and my family well, naturally and love and honor our Earth. I'm married to Ben and we are a blending family in progress. I'm loving on my growing tribe of sisterhood from all around the world, join us and stay connected.

Five Essential Oils For Sleep

Sleep is an extremely important part of our overall health and well-being. Unfortunately, with all the stresses and responsibilities of life, it can be hard to really get a good night’s sleep every night. However, with the help of essential oils, you can set yourself up for the rest you need to feel refreshed and well-rested in the morning!

Keep reading to learn about the best five essential oils for sleep…

  1. Cedarwood This woodsy-smelling essential oil is definitely one of my faves. It’s a great sleep aid because it actually interacts with and balances the hormones of your pineal gland! Your pineal gland is the gland in charge of producing melatonin, which is the sleep hormone. When this hormone is out of whack, this can contribute to insomnia. Diffuse some cedarwood before bed, or even mist some over your pillow to help with sleep problems.

  2. Chamomile Anxiety and depression can contribute heavily to sleep disruption. However, studies have found that both of these can be greatly improved with the use of chamomile oil! Chamomile actually helps to balance cortisol levels; which is the hormone that controls stress levels. If it’s discomfort that keeps you awake, chamomile oil is also a great pain reliever, so it can help with this problem as well! Make sure that you only use chamomile oil topically, or in a spray/diffuser since it shouldn’t be eaten. If you like drinking hot tea before bed, consider chamomile as a way to calm down and prepare your body and mind for sleep as well.

  3. Lavender This essential oil is the most popular to use in sleep-inducing aromatherapy. Lavender oil is the perfect oil to help you not only get to sleep, but to stay asleep as well. Just like chamomile, lavender has also been found to help with symptoms of anxiety and depression! Studies have also found that lavender oil has sedative properties that can slow down heart rate and relax the muscles in the body. This is a surefire way to get yourself prepared for a deep and rejuvenating sleep. Rub some lavender oil on your temples and wrists before bed, and enjoy the benefits of a truly good night’s sleep.

  4. Marjoram (bath) With a warm and nutty scent, marjoram oil is perfect for creating a tranquil environment for bedtime. Marjoram oil relieves tension, and has even been found to help calm feelings of sadness. You can also use this oil to help with indigestion issues that may be keeping you up at night. This essential oil has also been a part of studies specifically for people with difficult schedules that make sleep a struggle… The results were improved sleep for all the participants! If you have a rough schedule, and find it hard to sleep well when you have the time, consider a warm bath infused with marjoram oil before you go to bed.

  5. Ylang Ylang This light, floral oil is the most mild of the sleep-aiding essential oils. Ylang Ylang is perfect for a quick pre-bed time destress. Make a Ylang Ylang essential oil lotion with your favorite carrier oil, and add it to your nightly routine. This will help you get relaxed and ready to get into bed for a blissful sleep. Just make sure to always dilute your Ylang Yang before applying topically. :)

Essential oils have so many benefits and uses; especially for sleeping well at night! Let me know your favorite essential oil sleep mixtures below. Also feel free to contact me with any questions you have about your essential oil needs.
